Using a stroller on trains in Japan

Strollers are allowed on Japanese trains and are a common sight. A little planning helps you avoid stairs and crowds.

Elevators and wide gates

Most stations have at least one elevator and a wide ticket gate for strollers and wheelchairs. Station maps show elevator locations, and staff are happy to point you in the right direction.

Avoid rush hour

Trains in Tokyo and Osaka are extremely crowded on weekday mornings and early evenings. Plan longer journeys outside those times.

On the Shinkansen

Fold the stroller if possible, or book the last row of a car where there is space behind the seats. Children under six ride free when they do not use their own seat.
