Renting baby gear and strollers in Japan

Flying to Japan with a stroller, car seat and travel cot is a lot to carry. Renting some gear, and sending bags ahead, can make the trip much easier.

Bring or rent a stroller

A light, foldable stroller is the best choice for Japan's trains and stairs. If you only have a large stroller at home, renting a compact one in Japan is often easier.

Baby gear rental companies in Japan can deliver to your hotel or airport. Book ahead in busy seasons.

Cribs and baby cots

Many hotels lend baby cots for free or a small fee, but the number is limited. Ask when you book, and confirm a few days before arrival.

Send luggage ahead

Luggage forwarding (takkyubin) lets you send suitcases from the airport or hotel to your next stop, usually by the next day. Traveling with only a stroller and a day bag makes trains much easier.

Car seats

Taxis in Japan usually do not provide car seats. If you plan to rent a car, ask for a child seat when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a stroller in Japan?

Yes. Baby gear rental services deliver strollers to hotels and airports, and some theme parks and malls rent strollers on site.

Is it better to bring a stroller to Japan?

A small, foldable stroller is worth bringing. Large strollers can be hard on crowded trains and stairs.
